This podcast demonstrates that memorising for its own sake is unlikely to make us better thinkers. We need to stick to memorising music and poetry. You don’t have to be a neuro-scientists to understand this. The famous Mr S. learnt Dante’s Inferno by heart and that’s without knowing any Italian. Not only did he not understand it, a lot of poetry is difficult to understand, he did not appreciate its beauty. It turns out that having a memory of this type is not to possess something extra, but rather having something missing.
